The Vision Behind ReportingCon

Updated: Apr 25, 2023

Why ReportingCon?

Organizing events may seem glamorous from the outside, but the truth is that there is a lot of logistical effort and coordination involved. For every extra feature we add to the event, there are many more actions that need to be taken.

Despite these challenges, we are now in our second ReportingCon and have expanded beyond Malta for the first time. So, what motivates us to take our vision further and grow the event beyond an annual gathering in Malta?

The driving factor behind this is our commitment to creating a platform where finance professionals can connect and discuss important issues in their industry. We believe that this is essential for promoting innovation and growth within the sector. By expanding the event to new locations, we can bring together even more diverse perspectives and help drive meaningful change in the finance industry.

A place of connection

Foremost, we needed to create a place where people can freely connect and speak up their minds without feeling overwhelmed. However, in the world of finance, we are frequently side-lined by more interesting stuff, which somehow catches the public eye and too many times does not create the right spaces for finance people to discuss their needs (And this is not about VAT or IFRS. There are industry leaders who could do a better job at this.) This is about taking reporting and shifting it from an ordinary point to truly understanding what is required from us. It’s not just about understanding the standard, but about reviewing our processes to intentionally improve them, which so many times is a race against time in our month-end process.

And why reporting?

In our day-to-day work, we are realizing and confirming that reporting is the area where somehow we never seem to reach the desired level. There are always some parts that have not been properly tackled or where the message is somehow not true and fair or where it’s too quick to tell how you would have fared. With this in mind, we are pushing to discuss 4 themes and each time handling them from different perspectives.

What are we to expect?

This time around, we have higher expectations for the event compared to the first one because we received feedback and made improvements in several areas. The topics will be the same:

  • Financial Reporting

  • ESG Reporting

  • Consolidation

  • Budgeting

The four areas are the pillars of a company’s reporting processes, and thus the reason we’ll keep focusing on these areas. However, this time round we’ll have two important changes:

  • Increased discussions with case scenarios properly presented

  • Increased connectivity through some changes in the event plan

And beyond this event?

ReportingCon will no longer be an annual event held only in Malta. Instead, we plan to host a series of events that will include a mix of live and online formats. We will also expand our reach beyond Malta and explore different countries to understand the unique issues and concerns related to the same areas of focus. This will allow us to bring together different perspectives on the same fundamental concept, which we believe will be valuable for all attendees.
